Stone Coated Metal Roofing Tile Design
Stone Coated Metal Roofing is an advanced composite roofing system that merges the structural durability of industrial steel with the aesthetic versatility of natural stone. Unlike traditional roofing materials, it features an eight-layer “sandwich” structure designed to withstand extreme environments, from arctic blizzards to tropical monsoons, while maintaining a lightweight profile (approx. 1/6th the weight of concrete tiles).
Let’s explore the three engineered components that define its quality: the Core Substrate, the Acrylic Bonding System, and the Surface Granules.
1. Core Material: The Steel Substrate
The core determines the roof’s mechanical strength and lifespan. We utilize high-tensile steel specifically treated to prevent corrosion through a self-healing mechanism.
Galvalume Steel (Aluminum-Zinc Alloy)
The industry standard for premium tiles is Galvalume (Al-Zn), not standard Galvanized steel. The coating composition is critical: 55% Aluminum, 43.4% Zinc, and 1.6% Silicon.
·Mechanism of Protection
• Aluminum (Barrier Protection): Forms a microscopic oxide layer that physically blocks moisture and oxygen from reaching the steel core.
• Zinc (Sacrificial Protection):If the coating is scratched/cut, the zinc ions migrate to the exposed area to protect the steel from rusting.
·Performance Data
Galvalume offers superior heat reflectivity and 3 to 6 times the corrosion resistance of galvanized steel in salt spray tests.
Multi-Layer Treatment
Anti-Fingerprint Coating : A specialized protective layer applied to both sides. It prevents oxidation during storage and enhances the adhesion of the basecoat glue.
Steel Thickness: Available in varying gauges tailored to wind-load requirements, typically ranging from 0.35mm to 0.55mm.
2. Adhesive System: Weather-Resistant Acrylic
The adhesive system acts as the “muscle” holding the structure together. We use a proprietary Water-Based Acrylic Resin formula that remains flexible even after curing.
·The Basecoat (Primer Layer)
This serves as the primary bedding agent for the stone chips.
• High Viscosity:The basecoat must be thick enough to embed the stone granules deeply (approx. 50-60% of the granule diameter).
• Additives:Enriched with UV inhibitors to prevent brittleness and biocides to inhibit the growth of moss, algae, and lichen.
·The Overglaze (Topcoat)
A final clear acrylic layer sprayed over the stone chips.
• Chip Lock Technology: It creates a hard, transparent shell that prevents granule loss during heavy rain or installation.
• Self-Cleaning: The smooth finish prevents dust from adhering to the textured surface, allowing rain to wash the roof clean naturally.
3. Surface Material: Natural Stone Chips
The surface layer defines the aesthetics and physical protection of the tile.
·Sintered Stone Chips (Ceramic Process)
We utilize High-Temperature Sintered Granules (CL Rock). This process involves coating natural basalt particles with inorganic pigments and firing them in a kiln at temperatures exceeding 800°C.
• Ceramic Glaze: The color becomes a ceramic glaze fused to the stone, ensuring the roof will not fade for decades.
• Contrast with Dyed Chips:Cheaper “dyed” chips use organic paints that break down under UV light, leading to rapid color fading within 2-3 years.
